MONTGOMERY COUNTY MUSLIM FOUNDATION DEDICATED THE MONTH OF JANUARY TO CELEBRATE THE LEGACY OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, SERVING 37,000 POUNDS OF FOOD AND DISTRIBUTING OVER 4000 COOKIES TO HOMELESS SHELTERS ON MLK DAY OF SERVICE
MCMF started the New year by serving dinners at the Interfaith Women’s shelter Every evening starting Jan 1st to Jan 13, 2021, different ethnic dinners were delivered to 35 women at the shelter. On January 10, 2021, MCMF held its January Drive-Thru Distribution and served food boxes to 520 families donating 60 lbs. of food box to each family. The boxes contained rice, pasta, pasta sauces, oil, milk, peanut butter, chicken, onions, potatoes, and carrots. MCMF distributed 31,200 pounds of food serving over 2000 individuals in MOCO. Thanks to Mumin Barre for coordinating the drive. The event was followed by MCMF fresh produce distribution on January 16th, 2021, which distributed food boxes to over 150 families serving 5800 pounds of shelf-stable food and fresh produce to the families in need.
MCMF served 670 families with food and fresh produce in Jan 2021 distributing a total of over 37,000 pounds of food.
MCMF youth volunteer had a 1000 cookie challenge to serve baked goods to area shelter in MOCO. Youth volunteers far exceeded their target and baked and collected over 4000 cookies, brownies and cakes and donated to area shelters on Jan 18th, and Jan 19th, 2021. The shelters include - Interfaith Women's Shelter in Rockville and Silver Spring, Interfaith Men's Shelter, Priscilla House, Becky's house, Stepping Stone Shelter, Avery Half Way Home Treatment Center, Dwelling Place, Shephard's Table, Temporary Shelter for Women, Coalition for Homeless and Ar Rashidun Shelter. MCMF Volunteers spent over 600 hours on these projects. A big shout out to Naba Syed MCMF social media lead coordinator, all volunteers who baked the cookies and Amina Rashid for coordinating the MLK day of Service.
